Gwinnett County will send another senior to play football for Georgia Tech as Norcross' Anthony Autry made a commitment Sunday to the Yellow Jackets.
Autry, a 6-foot-2, 180-pounder, was a standout on offense at wide receiver and also in the secondary this past season. He was selected as the county's defensive back of the year by the Touchdown Club of Gwinnett.
He joins Greater Atlanta Christian offensive lineman Chase Roberts as Gwinnett seniors committed to Tech. Running back Charles Perkins (Collins Hill), defensive lineman Shawn Green (Grayson) and kicker Chris Tanner (Norcross) are Gwinnett players currently on the Tech roster.
"I liked the coaches (at Tech), they were really cool," Autry said. "They remind me a lot of my coaches. I like the way they fly around on defense but they're recruiting me as an athlete, so I may play some offense, too."
Autry had a large group of offers from smaller programs like Appalachian State and Chattanooga, as well as an offer from Indiana, but recently has received heavier interest from bigger schools like Arkansas and Kentucky. He has a visit lined up to Arkansas for January, but he isn't sure he will take it now that Tech offered. Most smaller programs recruited Autry as a wide receivers, while the bigger programs liked him as a defensive back.
Autry made the commitment over the phone Sunday morning in a conversation with Tech assistant Charles Kelly and head coach Paul Johnson.
"They were real excited about (my commitment)," Autry said. "They just welcomed me to the family. They were excited that I committed."
