TV show for parents airs Monday

SUWANEE -- The season premiere of Gwinnett County Public Schools' ParenTVision is scheduled for 8 p.m. Monday.

Collins Hill High School Counselor Mararet Cheeley will host the show and introduce a new magazine-style format.

ParenTVision aims to educate parents about 21st century issues facing their children. It's a joint collaboration between the district's broadcast, distance learning, advisement and counseling departments.

"It's never easy being a parent, but with the technology aspects of today the challenges facing parents are greater than ever," said Greg LaHatte, district director of broadcast and distance learning. "ParenTVision is our way of helping parents understand what their children are dealing with."

The show also features a segment that lets students speak their opinions on current issues, according to Dianne Thompson, GCPS director of advisement and counseling.

"Being able to hear from the students directly is key. What they share is honest and genuine and may prove to be a real awakening for some parents," she said.

Topics covered in the season premiere include new technology, Facebook, the search for the right college, the HOPE scholarship and a look at how much sleep students are getting.

The show is scheduled to air on Charter channel 22, Comcast channel 24 or 26 depending on location.

A live video stream will also be accessible at 8 p.m. Monday at www.gcpstv.org.
