GWINNETT GRADS: Locals involved in 17 bowls

For the next month, college football bowl coverage will be all over the TV. In many of those broadcasts, a Gwinnett product be involved.

Gwinnett has at least one player in 17 bowl games, including seven in the BCS National Championship Game between LSU and Alabama.

Here's a look at where to catch the Gwinnett players during bowl season:

-- Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, Dec. 17, 5:30 p.m., ESPN

Ohio vs. Utah State

Berkmar grad Jerry Gross is a senior wide receiver for Ohio. A former state high jump champion as a high-schooler, he has played in every game and has seven catches for 62 yards and a touchdown.

Southern Miss vs. Nevada

North Gwinnett's Garrett Clark is a true freshman offensive lineman for Southern Miss.

N.C. State vs. Louisville

Grayson grad Michael Peek is a true freshman reserve linebacker for N.C. State, totaling seven tackles (six solos) and a sack this season.

Air Force vs. Toledo

Peachtree Ridge's Asher Clark is a key running back for Air Force, while the reserves include running backs Cody Getz (Buford) and Jon Lee (Apalachee), and tight end Devin Durden (Buford). Clark has rushed for 1,096 yards and six scores, averaging 7.3 yards a carry.

BYU vs. Tulsa

Grayson's Kori Gaines plays defensive back for BYU.

Shiloh grad Ernst Brun is a tight end for Iowa State.

Mississippi State vs. Wake Forest

Central Gwinnett's Dewayne Cherrington is a walk-on defensive lineman at MSU. Wake Forest gets big contributions from two Gwinnett grads: Brookwood's Terence Davis has five TD catches at wide receiver and Meadowcreek's Cyhl Quarles leads the team with 96 tackles (31 stops more than the No. 2 tackler).

-- Hyundai Sun Bowl, Dec. 31, 2 p.m., CBS

Georgia Tech vs. Utah

Grayson's Shawn Green at defensive tackle, Collins Hill's Charles Perkins at running back and Norcross' Chris Tanner at kicker are reserves for Tech.

-- Autozone Liberty Bowl, Dec. 31, 3:30 p.m., ABC

Vanderbilt vs. Cincinnati

Vandy's roster features Collins Hill's T.J. Greenstone at defensive line, South Gwinnett's Jonathan Krause at wideout and Grayson's Tristan Strong at linebacker. Krause is third on the team with 23 catches and returns punts. Cincy defensive end Silverberry Mouhon is a freshman from Norcross.

Auburn vs. Virginia

North Gwinnett's C.J. Uzomah is a true freshman reserve at wide receiver for Auburn.

Georgia vs. Michigan State

Punter Drew Butler (Peachtree Ridge) and linebacker Christian Robinson (Greater Atlanta Christian) play key roles for UGA, which also has the following Gwinnett grads on the roster: Buford's Kolton Houston, Buford's Dallas Lee and Wesleyan's David Andrews play offensive line, Parkview's Jason Veal (No. 49), Dacula's Jeremy Sulek (No. 38) and Duluth's Ricky Lowe (No. 88) are linebackers, Wesleyan's Kyle Karempelis (No. 33) and Wesleyan's Merritt Hall (No. 43) are running backs, Buford's Billy Johnson (No. 94) is a snapper, Winder-Barrow's Taylor Bradberry (No. 80) is a wide receiver, Peachtree Ridge's Connor Norman (No. 11) is a defensive back and North Gwinnett's Michael Tamburo (No. 6) is a quarterback.

Brookwood's A.J. Sims is a true freshman wide receiver for Michigan State.

For South Carolina, Brookwood's Kenny Miles is a running back, Mill Creek's Davis Moore is a snapper/linebacker, GAC's Corey Simmons is a tight end and Apalachee's Chaun Gresham is a linebacker.

Florida vs. Ohio State

Buford's Omar Hunter starts on the Florida defensive line and Peachtree Ridge's Brad Roby starts at cornerback for Ohio State.

Oklahoma State vs. Stanford

Mill Creek's Ryan Robinson plays defensive end for Oklahoma State.

Clemson vs. West Virginia

Brookwood grad Dawson Zimmerman is Clemson's starting punter, averaging 42 yards per punt (38.2 net).

Arkansas vs. Kansas State

GAC's Julian Horton is a reserve wideout for Arkansas.

--BCS National Championship Game, Jan. 9, 8:30 p.m., ESPN

LSU vs. Alabama

GAC's T-Bob Hebert and Peachtree Ridge's Kevin Minter and Derrick Bryant play for LSU, while Alabama's local contingent includes Norcross' Darius Hanks and Adrian Hubbard, Brookwood's Kellen Williams and North Gwinnett's Austin Shepherd.


Swope gets national honor

Buford grad Dominique Swope, a freshman at Georgia Southern, was named the Sports Network's FCS Offensive Player of the Week after leading the Eagles past Old Dominion last week in the playoff opener.

Swope rushed for 255 yards, the fourth-best total in Eagles' history, in the 55-48 win that sent his team into a matchup today with Maine.

Jefferson has breakout season

Parkview grad Domonique Jefferson, a freshman at Union College, finished his debut season with 23 catches for 337 yards and three scores.

He caught two of those touchdowns, including the game-winner, in a 24-19 win over rival Cumberland.

Union lost its Nov. 12 season finale 95-89 in triple overtime to Faulkner, shattering the NAIA record for most combined points in a game. Union senior Chandler Priest, a Grayson grad, had two TDs in that game and Jefferson had two catches for 43 yards.

Union senior Rolando Dyer, a Central Gwinnett grad, had 27 catches for 231 yards and a TD this season.

Quick hits

Collins Hill grad David Coffey, a senior at Campellsville, was an honorable mention All-Mid South Conference selection this season. He also was selected for an NAIA All-Star Game in January. ... Buford's Andy Kellogg, an offensive lineman at Shorter, was a first-team All-Mid-South selection. ... Collins Hill grad Gary Tiller, who plays at Shorter, was a Mid-South All-Academic selection. ... West Georgia senior Randy Sides has been picked for the Division II Small College All-Star Game Jan. 16 in Virginia Beach.


Mallow has big game

Brookwood grad Katie Mallow, a freshman at Appalachian State, had 14 points Monday in an 82-46 win over Western Carolina.

She made 5 of 11 field goals (2 of 5 from 3-point range) and both free-throw attempts.


Penston, Douglass make all-region

North Georgia's Kelly Penston (North Gwinnett) and Natalie Douglass (Brookwood) were both named NSCAA All-Southeast Region second-team selections this week.

Penston, a sophomore, had six goals and two assists and Douglass had five goals and three assists from the midfield.
