SUWANEE -- For the fourth year in a row, the Shadowbrook Baptist Church of Suwanee hosts a holiday event called Christmas in the Park today and Saturday in Suwanee's Town Center Park.

"It's our gift to the community and there is no cost," Ministry Assistant Susan Croxton said. "We like to do this for our Suwanee community."

During both days, the church has a town set up filled with children's activities. There are arts and crafts, a complete Nativity scene for children to dress up and act out in, and train rides with Christmas music, plus many others.

The Great Winter Race, which was started last year, has returned again for people of all ages to climb, run and craft for the number one spot. It's an obstacle course race with events at separate stations. Participants may have to build a snowman or hurl snowballs into buckets before moving to the next station.

Folks from the church track all of the times and tally the winners from four different age groups. The winners receive gift cards to various places in Gwinnett County. Anyone interested in the race can sign up on the day of the event.

For those who would rather sit back and relax, local churches and school will perform live music during the night, and carolers will be walking around the park singing Christmas classics.

"It's a unique event. The whole park is set up like a (Charles) Dickens village with 11 different buildings," Croxton said. "It's a really nice family event because there is something there for everyone to enjoy."

Shadowbrook will also provide refreshments for attendees to stay warm. They are stocking up on hot chocolate and cookies for several thousand people for both days.

The church is collecting canned goods and other nonperishable items both days. The food goes to the Caring Hearts Ministry, a Suwanee food bank.

The event is free and open to the public.
