DULUTH -- If you ask Gwinnett Gladiators President Steve Chapman, the Sing for Santa concert is about as cool as it gets.
"It's actually one of my favorite nights of the year," Chapman said. "It's also one of Atlanta's largest singing youth choirs during the holiday season."
The annual concert, which brings together singers from 30 area elementary schools, is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday's Gwinnett Gladiators games during the intermission.
In its eighth year, the event continues to captivate Arena at Gwinnett Center audiences.
"These kids are amazing," Chapman said. "They sound great. They sing during the intermission while the Zamboni (ice resurfacer) is going."
Toys for Tots is helping sponsor the event, and officials with the organization are encouraging all those who attend Saturday or Sunday to bring a new, unwrapped toy to the Gwinnett Arena. Saturday's game against South Carolina is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. The Sunday game starts at 4:05 p.m.
Atlanta Toys for Tots is a local affiliate of the national U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program and helps families in need throughout the metro Atlanta area.
According to spokesperson Cherrie Carney, Toys for Tots is hoping to donate 800,000 toys to families in need for the 2011 holiday season.
She said the annual Sing for Santa event plays a large part in meeting the goals.
According to its website, the Toys for Tots program aims to help children throughout the country to "experience the joy of Christmas, to play an active role in the development of one of our nation's most valuable resources: children."
