ART BEAT: ArtWorks! Gwinnett seeks nominations for first arts awards

ArtWorks! Gwinnett is planning a party, and they need your help. On Jan. 23, this nonprofit organization, created to promote and support the arts in our community, is hosting an elegant evening event at the Hudgens Center for the Arts. Titled "Fusion: 1st Annual ArtWorks! Gwinnett Awards," the focus of the event will be to celebrate art organizations and individuals in our area.

What you can do as supporters and friends of the arts is help with the nominations. There are numerous categories, and the process is simple. The deadline to submit nominations is at 5 p.m. Dec. 15, so be sure to take action quickly.The categories and instructions can be found online at http://new.artworksgwinnett.com/?p=956. Please note that the nominations for student artists are to be submitted by art educators and administrators working in Gwinnett public or private schools.

ArtWorks! Gwinnett describes the process as follows: "The public may make ArtWorks! Gwinnett Community Impact Award (various categories), Arts Volunteer of the Year and Corporate Arts Citizen of the Year (individual and corporation) nominations for efforts made during the period of Dec. 1, 2010, through Dec. 1, 2011. Nominees must be individuals, organizations or businesses (depending on the category) that have resided, worked or conducted business in GwinnettCounty. In addition to the winner, up to two honorable mentions will also be announced in each of these categories. Individuals may not nominate themselves, but partnerships, businesses and organizations may self-nominate."

There are 12 categories under Community Impact to nominate. They include: Arts Educator; Arts Presenter (nonprofit arts groups such as museums, theaters and dance companies;) Creative Business which can include commercial arts-related businesses; Arts Leader (administrator or manager) of a non-profit arts organization; Artist of any Discipline; Arts Ensemble or Collective; Arts Partnership; Community Arts Program; Arts Volunteer of the Year; Gwinnett Corporate Arts Citizen of the Year-Business; Gwinnett Corporate Arts Citizen of the Year-Business Person; and Lifetime Achievement in the Arts.

A thorough description of each category is available online. To nominate your favorites, submit each nomination to info@artworksgwinnett.org. You will name the category award, give your contact info, nominee info and a less than 1,000 word reason for nominating. Optional support materials can be included. Please be sure to read the instruction online thoroughly to be sure you include what is required.
