ATLANTA -- A soccer tournament is scheduled Saturday to honor the life of a Duluth man who died Nov. 22 from injuries sustained in a Fulton County car wreck.
Proceeds from the Father Christmas Cup at Silverbacks Park in Atlanta will go to support his family during their time of loss.
Family member Jim Meeker said it's a fitting tribute for the late Glen Walker.
"Glen loved soccer," Meeker said. "It was the first sport that he played, and I think it's a great tribute."
Meeker said the family was grateful for the help as they continue to recover from the Nov. 5 wreck that also injured his wife Sandra. Their children, Cameron, 2, and Alana, 6, were in the vehicle but were not seriously injured.
Meeker said Sandra Walker continues a gradual rehabilitation.
"She was able to go out shopping and run errands yesterday with some assistance," Meeker said. "She's starting to get back into the routine. She's been able to spend more time with her kids, which is good for her and for them."
Meeker said that Sandra and the rest of the family is looking forward to Saturday's fundraiser.
According to its website, the purpose of the Father Christmas Cup is to "provide comfort and financial support to a family who will be experiencing their first holiday season without a father...the message of hope and love sent to the family at such a critical time is powerful and life changing."
Games start at 1 p.m. and go until 6 p.m. Tournament game shirts are $25, and raffle tickets are $1 each at the event.
