DULUTH -- On Saturday, the Duluth Fall Festival presents Duluth's 29th Annual Lighting of the Tree in the town green at City Hall.

The event starts at 5 p.m. inside of City Hall as an open house with the Duluth High School chorus singing traditional carols while guests enjoy complimentary refreshments.

"It's a great time to see the inside of City Hall, which has been decked out for the holidays -- inside and out," Jayne Madigan, event coordinator said.

Around 6 p.m., everyone will be asked to make way to the public town green area for more live entertainment with local elementary school children singing Christmas songs, including those from Chattahoochee Elementary School.

The biggest highlight of the evening -- besides the enormous Christmas tree -- is Santa Claus arriving in a handmade sleigh pulled by live reindeer. Children have an opportunity to take pictures with Old St. Nick, plus they'll receive a free candy cane. Not a child? Don't believe that pictures with Santa are just for the kids -- adults and pets (on leases) are invited to snap a photo, too.

"We don't want people to think these photos are for children only," Madigan said. "Many adults got their pictures with Santa last year."

Duluth's theme is old-fashioned Christmas.

"We want to go back to the basics," she said. "It's about sharing time with friends and family -- a toast to the season."

After the tree lighting, the city invites music lovers to walk to the Red Clay Theatre as Eddie Owen, founder of Eddie's Attic in Decatur, opens the doors for the first concert under his management. Patterson Hood of the Drive-By Truckers takes the stage to christen the inaugural event.

The tree will be lit at 6:30 p.m. The Red Clay Theatre's doors open at 7 p.m.
