Oscar Magallanes
NORCROSS -- A Norcross man faces deportation after he allegedly roughed up a taxi-driver and tried to bail on his fare -- with the cabbie's DVD player and microphone.
The cabbie was driving customer Oscar Magallanes, 30, to a billiards hall at Peachtree Industrial Boulevard and Jimmy Carter Boulevard just after midnight Sunday when things took a turn for the worst, according to a Gwinnett police report.
Magallanes told the driver he intended to buy "some drugs," and the driver refused further service, pulling into a gas station. Outside the vehicle, Magallanes charged and pushed the driver. When the driver retrieved a lug wrench from the trunk, Magallanes ripped his DVD player and radio microphone from the car and took off running, his $15 fare unpaid, the report states.
When the cabbie gave chase on foot into a nearby shopping center, Magallanes threw the stolen property atop an emissions-testing shop and pushed his pursuer on the ground. Another cab driver who recognized the victim picked him up, and both trailed Magallanes until police caught up, the report states.
Police retrieved the stolen property and returned it to its owner.
Magallanes was booked on charges of robbery, simple battery, theft of services, battery and criminal trespass. A native of Mexico, he's also being held for immigration authorities, jail records show.
