DURHAM, N.C. — The Gwinnett Braves defeated the first-place Durham Bulls 2-1 Monday night in the opening game of a quick two-game series, inching closer in the division race and tying for the top spot in the International League Wild Card standings.
Todd Redmond struck out nine batters in six innings to earn the victory and Cory Gearrin followed with four strikeouts in a 1 2/3 inning hold. Jairo Asencio earned his IL-leading 24th save to complete a stingy night from G-Braves hurlers.
With the win and Lehigh Valley's two losses in a Monday doubleheader, Gwinnett (75-61) is tied with the Iron Pigs (76-62) in the Wild Card race. The G-Braves trail Durham by only 2.5 games in the IL South standings.
Mauro Gomez went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and a double in Monday's win, while Ruben Gotay scored both Gwinnett runs. Gotay had a hit and walked twice.
The G-Braves play the Bulls in the series finale Tuesday. Yohan Flande gets the start.
