Charles Sikes

Charles Richard Sikes was born in Atlanta, Georgia, the only child of the late Luster W. Sikes and Blanche M. Sikes. He grew up in Lawrenceville, Georgia where he graduated as valedictorian from Lawrenceville High School. He graduated from the University of Georgia where he was a member of the Biftad Honor Society and Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. He received his masters degree from Peabody College in Nashville, Tennessee. He began his career in Education in Cullman, Alabama, where he met his wife of 60 years, Irene Stanford. He later was an Instructor and Commandant of Day Cadets at the Bolles Military School in Jacksonville, Florida. In 1959 he joined the administrative team at Baptist Memorial Hospital as director of Personnel and Public Relations. He returned to the place of his birth at Georgia Baptist Memorial Hospital in Atlanta as Assistant Administrator for six years. In 1971 he was appointed Administrator of the Gwinnett County Hospital System where he remained until accepting the position of Corporate Director of Human Resources at the Baptist Medical Center in Birmingham, Alabama in 1978. He returned to Jacksonville in 1981 as Executive Regional Director of Methodist Healthcare System. He retired from Healthcare Administration in 1985 and returned to Atlanta as owner and manager of the Healthcare Recruitment Firm - Medical Search of America, Inc. which he operated until 2005. Since that time he has enjoyed spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He and his wife traveled extensively and spent a great deal of time at their mountain home in Sky Valley, Georgia. He was a member of Parkway Baptist Church in Duluth, Georgia, and an avid Georgia Bulldog supporter, active member of the University of Georgia Alumni Association and the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Alumni Society, and a proud veteran of the Korean War. Charles is survived by his wife, Irene and daughters, Karen Sikes of Atlanta, Sandra Phillips of Duluth, and Laurie Sikes of Atlanta. He and Irene were blessed with grandchildren, Stephen and Shellie Phillips of Smyrna, Stanford and Lindsey Phillips of Avondale Estates, Samantha Phillips of Atlanta, and Savannah Phillips of Duluth, and great grandchildren Stephen Michael and Stetson Phillips of Smyrna and Neve and Ford Phillips of Avondale Estates. In addition to Charles' immediate family, he is survived by his brother-in-law Wiley Stanford of Flowery Branch and his nieces, Susan Stanford Jemison of Montgomery and Charlotte Stanford Jackson of Auburn, his cousins, Bobby Sikes Jr. of Atlanta, Susan Sikes Davis of Grayson, and Sylvia Hawkins of Lawrenceville. A Funeral Service to Celebrate the Life of Charles will be at 3:30 P.M. on Saturday, August 27, 2011 at Tom M. Wages Lawrenceville Chapel. Rev. Jim King will officiate. Interment will follow in the Hebron Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Thursday and Friday from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home.
