Parkview vs. Stephenson
Parkview Panthers (8-AAAAA) Head coach: Cecil Flowe
2010 record: 5-6Stephenson Jaguars (2-AAAAA) Head coach: Ron Gartrell
2010 record: 9-2
Last year's opener between these two teams was a tough, physical, defensive affair, and Parkview head coach Cecil Flowe expects nothing different this time around.
"They're going to take some things away from you," Flowe said of the No. 6 state-ranked Jaguars. "So, you've got to get our nickels and dimes where you can get them. We've just got to focus on playing football. One game never defines a season."
Focus could be an issue for both teams, with the Panthers facing three former teammates -- Miami-committed linebacker Raphael Kirby, quarterback/running back Ali Groves and South Carolina-committed defensive back Kyle Fleetwood -- who transferred to Stephenson over the summer.
The Jaguars also feature Division I commitments in DE Jarontay Jones (Virginia Tech), RB Mike Davis (Florida) and DL Jafar Mann (Florida).
So, Flowe will rely on veterans like junior linebacker Kyle Williams and senior quarterback Jack Esmonde to provide steady leadership to keep the Panthers' focus where it needs to be.
Last meeting: Stephenson won 21-14 in 2 OT last year
Directions to Hallford Stadium: I-285 east to Memorial Drive, make left and turn left on Rockbridge Road. At Georgia Perimeter College, turn right on College Drive.
