Archer at Duluth
Archer Tigers (8-AAAAA) Coach: Andy Dyer
2010 record: 2-8Duluth Wildcats (7-AAAAA) Coach: Corey Jarvis
2010 record: 4-6
Two programs with a lot of optimism square off at Cecil Morris Field tonight hoping to take a big step forward.
The Wildcats are hoping to build momentum off a season in which they quadrupled their win total from the previous year and take the first step towards being a playoff contender in Region 7-AAAAA.
While there are plenty of givens in their lineup, like the potential explosivness of skill players like quarterback Anfornee Stewart and receiver Myles Campbell, there are some unknowns Jarvis is anxious to see in action.
"As a coach, it's the first game, so you want to see where you stand," Jarvis said. "You just hope the kids come out (strong) and you've prepared them well enough."
Likewise, Archer coach Andy Dyer is hoping his Tigers take the kind of giant leap Duluth did a year ago, and their victory over Apalachee in their preseason scrimmage is the first positive sign.
But he also knows he will need steadiness from veterans like quarterback Jarvis Holley and receiver Randall Smith to keep mistakes at a minimum, something that won't necessarily be easy against a Duluth defense led by cornerback Ahmad Muhammad, who caused two fumbles in the Wildcats' scrimmage against Central Gwinnett.
"We've matured in all three phases of the game," Dyer said. "We'll find out how much (tonight)."
Last meeting: Duluth won 21-17 last year
Directions to Duluth High School: From I-85, take Ga. Highway 120 east to Buford Highway and turn right. Take a left at the next light onto Brock Road and school is on the left.
