'Chase a Cop' on Sept. 24

LAWRENCEVILLE -- Those looking to raise money for Gwinnett County Sheriff's Department charities can sign up for Chase a Cop, a 5k/1-mile fun run scheduled for 8 a.m. Sept. 24 at Tribble Mill Park in Lawrenceville.

All proceeds benefit the sheriff's department charities Beat the Heat, Gwinnett Masters Special Olympics and the Sheriff s Explorer Program.

A $20 registration fee includes a T-shirt. Registration after Sept. 18 is $25.

Tribble Mill Park is located at 2125 Tribble Mill Parkway, Lawrenceville.

Online registration ends Sept. 21. Registration at the event is from 7 to 8 a.m.

Gainesville State band plays tonight at Coolray

LAWRENCEVILLE -- The Gainesville State College Brass Ensemble is slated to perform at Coolray Field today under the direction of instructor Don Strand.

The band is scheduled to perform the National Anthem during this evening's College Fair Night.

The College Fair will also feature other colleges and universities from around the state during an evening of recruitment and outreach to area high school students.

The G-Braves will be hosting the Norfolk Tides at Coolray Field, and start time is 7:05 p.m.

About 200 Gainesville State College students plan to attend the game. The GSC Alumni Association has planned an event on the Champion's Deck prior to the game, and the brass quintet is scheduled to perform as well.

Parks and recreation director honored

DULUTH -- On Aug. 18, city of Duluth Director of Parks and Recreation Kathy Marelle was presented with a certificate for successfully completing the George Harris Executive Management Program.

Offered through the University of Georgia's Carl Vinson Institute of Government, the executive management program is designed to develop the knowledge, skills and ability of select recreation professionals from around Georgia.

Only 19 recreational professionals were selected throughout the state to participate in the program.
