Buford man in critical condition after house fire

BUFORD -- A Sunday evening house fire left a Buford man in critical condition, as officials attributed the blaze to an unattended stove.

Gwinnett County firefighters and police officers responded to the home on the 5600 block of Sycamore Road in Buford at about 7:30 p.m. Sunday, finding the home engulfed in smoke, fire department spokesman Lt. Eric Eberly said. Crews reported hearing "someone yelling for assistance from inside," Eberly said.

Initial rescue attempts by police officers were thwarted by heat and smoke, but firefighters quickly deployed an extra line into the home. The victim was pulled from the home and treated at the scene for "significant burns and smoke inhalation" before being transported to Gwinnett Medical Center, Eberly said.

The man was listed in critical condition Sunday. Officials could not be reached Monday for an update on his condition.

The house sustained moderate damage, Eberly said. No firefighters were injured.

Investigators deemed the fire accidental and caused by food left unattended on the stove.
