Driver charged in fatal crash

STONE MOUNTAIN -- Police have charged a Stone Mountain man with vehicular homicide and DUI in a two-car collision Saturday that killed a Lithonia man.

Police on Tuesday identified the victim as Howard Hutchinson, 32. His passenger, a 28-year-old Loganville woman, sustained injuries that weren't life threatening, said Gwinnett police spokesman Cpl. Jake Smith.

The 8:17 p.m. crash occurred at the intersection of Rockbridge Road and West Park Place Boulevard, near Stone Mountain.

Police believe Luke Hayes was driving alone in a 2003 Chevy Trailblazer on the boulevard when he crossed two center medians and T-boned the 1995 Honda Accord that Hutchinson was driving west on Rockbridge Road. The impact carried both vehicles off the road, Smith said.

Hutchinson died shortly after he was transported from the scene. Hayes was transported to Gwinnett Medical Center and arrested several hours later, Smith said.

Accident investigators determined Hayes was at fault and had been drinking, Smith said.

Hayes remains jailed without bond on charges of felony vehicular homicide, reckless driving and failure to maintain lane. He was also cited for DUI, driving on the wrong side of the road and possession of less than an ounce of marijuana.
