Norcross Blue Devils 2011 Football Preview

Norcross Blue Devils 2011 Football Preview

— Mascot: Blue Devils. Coach: Keith Maloof (85-45 at Norcross, 107-57 overall) Region: 7-AAAAA Last playoff appearance: 2010

Offense

Norcross had an up-and-down 2010 season offensively, but head coach Keith Maloof is encouraged about an improved unit this season.

He's been particularly pleased with his play at quarterback, where Joseph Wilber has the edge on starting ahead of Bo Swanson.

The new QB will have a large pack of skilled playmakers surrounding him.

"We're as good as we've ever been (at the skill positions)," Maloof said. "They really challenge each other and they've got the ability to take the ball the distance any time they touch it."

SEC-bound wide receiver Jason Croom, a 6-foot-5 athletic target, heads up the group and fellow senior Anthony Autry. J.T. Tolbert (pictured), Tyler Williams and Myles Autry also are in the mix at wideout.

The offense also will feature speedy running back Alvin Kamara, one of the group's most potent weapons. Look for the offense to spread defenses out more than last season with so much speed and the graduation of tailback Kenny Huitt. When Norcross does its power running, fullbacks Tyvon Manns and Tanner Maloof will be more involved.

The Blue Devils also have some talent returning on the offensive front with tight end Domonique Mason and linemen Hamp Floyd, Danny Danh and Montorois Broughton.

Defense

Consider the defense a work in progress.

Some colleges didn't have the talent that Norcross did in last year's senior-laden front seven, so replacing that group on the line and at linebacker will be tough.

Only three players with heavy playing experience are back on defense "1'casafety Martavius Edwards, defensive tackle Isaiah Hinsley and linebacker Tanner Maloof, the coach's son.

Anthony Autry has emerged as a key player in the secondary for a defense that will be inexperienced. But that doesn't mean the group lacks talent.

"Defensively, I'm pleased with what we've done in the spring and the summer," Maloof said. "There's a lot of competition and depth. It's healthy to have people competing for jobs like that. Our defense may take awhile to settle in, but I expect us to be as good on defense this year as we have been."

Rolling again

Last year's 9-3 season was more indicative of what Maloof expects from his program, which bounced back from a subpar 2009 season.

Norcross missed the playoffs in 2009 with a 5-5 record, but that season is the anomaly of late. The Blue Devils have made the state playoffs every other season since 2005, with championships in difficult Region 7-AAAAA in both 2006 and 2007.

Even with some holes to fill this season, the high expectations haven't changed.

"We always have a goal of winning the region championship and winning the state championship," Maloof said. "That's where we start. We'll adjust the goals as we go if we have to."

Take away the 5-5 mark from 2009 and Norcross is 46-14 in the other five seasons since 2005.

Etc.

With a total of 146 players in grades 10 to 12, Norcross has one of the county's biggest programs and a large senior group of 38 players. That doesn't factor in another 70-plus freshmen who are out for the team. ... Senior Chris Bingham is back to handle the kicking and punting duties after a solid 2010 season. ... The Blue Devils sent 20 players off last year's team to play college football at some level. "Steve (Sims) and Reggie (Stancil) do a great job of getting information out to colleges and getting our kids seen," Maloof said. "And our kids have got a pretty good reputation that when they get to college, they're ready to compete." ... Entering his 13th season at Norcross, Maloof is second only to Parkview's Cecil Flowe (entering his 19th season) in longest tenure among Gwinnett head coaches.
