Mountain View Bears 2011 Football Preview

Mountain View Bears 2011 Football Preview

Mascot: Bears. Coach: Tim Hardy (6-8 at Mountain View, 6-8 overall) Region: 7-AAAAA Last playoff appearance: N/A

Offense

Moving the ball was one of the Bears' strengths a year ago with the passing of quarterback Charlie Brower (1,063 yards) mixed in with the running game, but Brower's graduation and departure to Georgia Southern has left Hardy a big hole to fill.

The job of signal caller has come down to two players in junior Chris Bartlett and sophomore Matt McGuigan.

Whoever lands the role as starting quarterback won't be without weapons at receiver, led by returning senior Frederick Hill. The Bears also received a boost from North Gwinnett transfer Tim Hill, a player Hardy said could be a real difference-maker.

Despite the inexperience at quarterback, Mountain View's offense has the potential to improve on its average of 15 points per game last year. The running back position is one of the strongest spots on the team with senior Eddie West and junior Marvin Elam (pictured), both who could have breakout seasons.

"Both those guys are good, downhill running backs," Hardy said. "They fall forward and gain yards. We will have both of them on the field as often as we can."

Making room for the backs to run will be a much improved offensive line, an area of the team that has greatly benefited from coach Brad Palmer's offseason workouts. Three-year starting junior Michael Hayes anchors the front five, along with a two-year starter in sophomore Blake Corry.

"Stepping into AAAAA was a big challenge for us on the line of scrimmage," Hardy said. "We have to have physicality up front to be successful."

Defense

Mountain View's defense will have a different look this year as the Bears are switching from a 3-4 to a 3-5-3, something Hardy said is designed to "put more hats on the ball."

Much like the offensive line, the defensive front should be improved this year. Leading the front three is senior noseguard Cameron Tootle, who also has experience at linebacker. Derek Petty, who doubles on the offensive line, also will be a factor.

The secondary has its share of two-way players, led by defensive back Tim Hill. Adding depth in that area is Jonathan Barber and Joshua Briggman, who both also see time at receiver.

The linebacker corps will be headed up on the outside by Tyler Bethune, while Burton Law and William Tuider fill up the middle.

The new defensive scheme was brought about in part by new defensive coordinator Danny Young, the only new member of Hardy's staff. Young, a Collins Hill graduate, was hired off the Brookwood staff to fill the spot vacated by Ken Robinson. Robinson left to start the football program at Providence Christian in Lilburn.

Bears growing up

Since starting the program three scant years ago, Mountain View and Hardy have seen the Bears come a long way.

Their first year of non-region play in 2009 went great with an 8-1 record (4-0 in varsity play), but they entered rugged Region 7-AAAAA a year ago and came away with a 2-8 record, a mark Hardy feels this year's team can improve on.

"We've had a good summer, we've really gotten after it," Hardy said. "The biggest difference I see from last year is the physical development of our players. Our strength coach (Brad Palmer) has done a tremendous job of developing our guys."

With the program expanding to over 70 players, including 13 seniors, on its roster, Hardy hopes his team will be in the fight for the fourth playoff spot in the region.

Etc.

Special teams play was a strength for the Bears last year with Brower handling the kicking and punting duties. But Brower's graduation left Hardy, who had experience in coaching special teams in college, an opportunity to mix things up. Look for the Bears to do some different things this year in hopes of creating more scoring opportunities.
