Duluth Wildcats 2011 Football Preview

Duluth Wildcats 2011 Football Preview

— Mascot: Wildcats. Coach: Corey Jarvis (4-6 at Duluth, 51-17 overall) Region: 7-AAAAA Last playoff appearance: 1994

With seven, and perhaps eight, starters returning from last season, there's plenty for the Wildcats to be excited about on the offensive side of the ball in Corey Jarvis' second year as head coach.

Included in those returnees are last year's leading rusher, Henry Enyenihi (113-645, 7 TDs), and leading receiver, (pictured) Myles Campbell (36-438, 2 TDs), as well as perhaps as many as starting linemen, led by seniors Mark Ruskell (6-2, 290, Sr.) and Tim Mettille (6-0, 240, Sr.).

"It's good to have a majority of our offense back," Jarvis said. "We've got a good skills group ... that did great in 7-on-7 drills (during the summer) and two-a-days. So, I don't think we'll miss a beat."

But make no mistake, the fuel to the Wildcats' engine will be senior quarterback Anfornee Stewart, who is back after creating 1,957 yards of total offense and 15 TDs in leading an offense that was a key in Duluth quadrupling its win total from the previous year and posting its best record in the last seven seasons.

"Anfornee's been the catalyst the last two years," Jarvis said of Stewart. "It's helping him out this year that we have (junior) Will Delorenzo also getting some reps (in practice), which has made Anfornee a better quarterback. He's going to be our guy."

Despite losing three key starters from last year "1 Carnell Simon, Justin Dixon and Xavier Walker "1 to graduation, the Wildcats' defense also returns a solid nucleus that is hoping to take the next step.

Returning starters Ahmed Muhammad and Michael Stewart give Duluth solid bookends at each cornerback spot, while Richard House will be counted on to lead an otherwise less-experienced, though perhaps more dynamic, defensive line.

"House is our only returning starter on the line," Jarvis said. "But I think athletically, we're probably better there this year. We've got a lot of speed and strength. (Senior Dervon) Clanton wasn't able to play last year, but we've got him back eligible. He'll be a big addition."

But it is in the middle with the linebackers where the Wildcats could be strongest, with seniors Joshua Johnson and Darnell Hart (62 tackles last year) back to make an impact.

"Johnson I think will be our quarterback on defense," Jarvis said. "And (new starter at safety, junior) Lou Cole knows the defense inside and out. They line up the defense.

"I think this could break-out year for Hart. He had to miss some (practice) time early on, but we're steadily getting him back in the fold."

Getting a kick start

Another area of great experience for the Wildcats will be in the kicking game, where both Stuart Hench and Caleb Starovasnik return.

Stuart took over the placekicking duties from Starovasnik late last season and made all six of his kicks (two field goals and four PATs), while Starovasnik will continue to handle punts, where he averaged 31.1 yards per kick a year ago.

Taking the next step

Having won just six total games in the previous six years, the Wildcats took a huge step forward by posting four wins "1 and standing one-win away from a tie-breaking procedure for a possible Class AAAAA state playoff berth "1 last season.

And it wasn't just in the tangible results that the Wildcats improved.

"Our kids feel like we competed very well in almost every game (last year), with the exception of the Alpharetta and Collins Hill games, and maybe the Norcross game," Jarvis said. "I don't think the kids were mature enough to handle the adversity of those games (at the time), but we got a chance to see them mature. We saw them grow up a lot."

The next step in continuing to establish a winning culture at Duluth, according to Jarvis, is pretty clear.

The Wildcats haven't made the postseason since 1994, and haven't had a winning season "1 and, in fact, have had just two .500 seasons "1 since.

That has Jarvis aiming high, even in ultra-competitive Region 7-AAAAA.

"The kids know what it takes to be successful now," Jarvis said. "They're hungry. ... The next step is to give our boys the opportunity to be in the playoffs. This senior class is great. They've done everything we've asked of them. They don't look like the same ball club (as they were the beginning of last season)."
