Dacula Falcons 2011 Football Preview

Dacula 2011 Football Preview

Mascot: Falcons. Coach: Jared Zito (0-0 at Dacula, 18-24 overall) Region: 8-AAAAA Last playoff appearance: 2009

On the back of newly printed blue Dacula football shirts, in gold letters the slogan reads "Same tradition, new era."

Following a successful coach of two decades, what other tact could Jared Zito take?

"The first year is always difficult," the Dacula head coach said. "You are selling your program, you are building your staff, you are training people in the way you want things done and probably the toughest part for me has been I forget who all I need to tell on procedural type stuff. Other than that everybody's got the same problems this time of year, a lot of stuff to get done and not a lot of time to do it."

In place as head coach since the winter, Zito's transition is mostly complete. He's assembled a staff, a mix of old and new, and spent the summer installing his offense, which is as new to him as any player.

During his time at North Forsyth, Zito ran a straight option attack and it worked well enough to get the Raiders into the Class AAAAA playoffs and host the school's first playoff game a year ago.

At Dacula, his offense will be based out of the spread, similar to Auburn and Clemson.

"I believe you have to fit your personnel to what you are going to do, especially in high school," Zito said. "You have to look at the type of kids you have and the type of kids you are going to have and what can be successful here."

The biggest change within the offense is the re-deployment of last year's quarterback Rocky Capobianco (pictured). In 10 games as a junior, the dual-threat QB rushed for 902 yards, nearly 100 per game, and passed for 679 yards and seven touchdowns. Under Zito, Brandon Goodson moves into the starting quarterback role and Capobianco becomes a slash offensive player with sets lining up as running back, receiver and quarterback.

"He'll probably be used more," Zito said. "He's a good athlete and we've got to find a way to get him the football, but also he can help us in other areas besides just playing quarterback."

The junior Goodson, according to Zito, adjusted into the new pass-oriented offense quickly.

"(He) has done a really good job of managing the game, of throwing the football," Zito said.

Among his targets are receiver/running back Marcus Cox, who rushed for 832 yards in nine games last season, Brandon Bartlett, who moves over to offense and spending most of his time on the other side of the ball in 2010, and sophomore Zantavias Cobb. Linebacker Alex Armah will also play some running back.

"We feel like, we are not real deep, but the kids we start off with have the potential to put some pressure on people if we execute and if we stay healthy," Zito said.

The defense will base out of the 4-3, not too much of a change from last year's multiple-style, making the transition much smoother.

Along with Armah, Chase and Morgan Loyd return, filling out the Falcons' linebacking corps with experience. Morgan Loyd led Dacula with 85 tackles a season ago and Armah was third with 51. Chris Camarata moves to defensive end and Zito is expecting a big senior season from Durum Alarms.

"He's another solid rock," Zito said.

In the secondary Juanye Roberts and Javin Webb will split time between offense and defense.

Back on track

It may be Zito's first year, but with a team stocked with 30 seniors there is a win-now attitude around the Falcons. Zito's Raiders made the playoffs last season out of Region 6-AAAAA, but his new team and players missed the chance.

And more than Zito, the senior class wants to return the Falcons to their familiar place in the postseason.

"They have talked about it a lot. Especially our seniors, they have talked about it a lot," Zito said. "They have talked about wanting to be the next great team. I told them, if they are willing to set high goals and willing to practice at that level that they'll need to practice to and commit to I am willing to go any place they want to go."
