Buford Wolves 2011 Football Preview

Buford Wolves 2011 Preview

Mascot: Wolves Coach: Jess Simpson (82-4 at Buford, 82-14 overall) Region: 6-AA Last playoff appearance: 2010

Offense

Buford's offensive success over the last decade has been due to its superior running game. That won't change this season "1 just the people carrying the ball. The Wolves will once again use a running-back-by-committee system. Darrian Smith (pictured) will get the bulk of the carries, but Andre Johnson, state champion 100-meter sprinter C.J. Moore and Ryan Dillard also are expected to get carries.

"Those guys all bring something to the table that's really good," Buford head coach Jess Simpson said.

Sam Clay takes over at quarterback and the senior has a big, strong arm. Clay was a pitcher on the Buford's state champion baseball team this spring and has committed to the Tech baseball program.

"He can throw the deep ball as good as anybody we've ever had," Simpson said. "He has a lot of touch on the ball."

Paris Head is the team's only returning receiver, while Division I prospect Kurt Freitag is back at tight end.

The offensive line is once again a Buford strength with four starters back. Tackles Vadal Alexander and Josh Cardiello return, along with center Tyler Burge and guard Robert Hill. Mikey Bart will also see a lot of reps when the Wolves get in a two tight end set.

"With the TE and OL being back and fullbacks and RBs, we should be able to run the football. That's where we start," Simpson said. "I'm excited to see what we can do on the perimeter with Sam and a good group of receivers to go with Paris and Dillon (Lee).

"It's going to be interesting."

Defense

Buford's defense will look a lot like last year's unit, only better. The Wolves have 10 starters back and have set the bar to be the best defense in school history.

"We've set our goals on defense really high," Simpson said. "We've looked at the best defenses here the last 10 years and taken the best of all of them and said that was the standard. It's something to shoot for."

Freitag and Rick LeGrant are back at the ends. Devonte Mack and Daquan Clark occupy the middle.

Dillon Lee, the team's leading tackler last year, anchors the defense. Andre Johnson and Nathan Staub also return.

Moore, Dillard and Head are back in the secondary. The only spot to fill is at safety where four players have been battling for the spots.

Junior David Petroni will handle the punting and kicking duties again.

Large team

Buford is a Class AA school, but the participation in the program is just as strong as many Class AAAAA schools. The Wolves had 150 players in the entire 9-12 program, leaving Simpson struggling to find enough jerseys for all of the players. The large team includes a 32-member senior class, the largest in school history.

Buford already has four players committed to Division I program and two more are expected to make commitments to SEC or ACC programs by mid-September. The Wolves could have as many as 15 players sign to some level of college football.

"They were talented as eighth-graders," Simpson set. "They had a great ninth grade year, you knew it was a talented group."
