BROOKWOOD VS. LASSITER
Brookwood Broncos (8-AAAAA)
Coach: Mark Crews
2010 record: 14-1
Last week: Season opener
Lassiter Trojans (5-AAAAA)
Coach: Jep Irwin
2010 record: 5-6
Last week: Season opener
OUTLOOK
Lassiter had been on a great run until last season, which included a lopsided loss to North Gwinnett in the Corky Kell Classic. The Trojans lost their last two regular-season games but slipped into the playoffs and lost in the first round.
Brookwood's season went in the opposite direction with a school-record 14 wins and its first state championship since 1996. The Broncos carry a 12-game winning streak into the season, but enter the Lassiter matchup with a number of new faces in the lineup.
Most of the skill position players are new on offense except for running backs Nick Tompkins and Jamaal Cole, who combined for nearly 3,000 rushing yards during the state title run. They will be relied on heavily while new quarterback Zach Moon grows into his starting role.
Brookwood's defensive strengths should be in the secondary, where Illnois commitment Zach Jackson and Tompkins are back, and at linebacker with returning starters Eric Mapoles and Conner Hennessey.
