LAWRENCEVILLE -- A DUI arrest led to the capture of a man charged with attempted murder after he attacked a friend with a machete, police said.

Online court records show charges against Mario Manuel Riera-Gonzalez, 42, were bound over to Gwinnett County Superior Court Wednesday, nine days after his arrest and more than two months after his alleged violent crime.

According to reports, Lawrenceville police responded to Maxx Car Service on Scenic Highway on the morning of June 2. The victim, an admitted friend of Riera-Gonzalez, told officers that he "noticed (Riera-Gonzalez) walk around the front of the vehicle with a machete" as he exited his car.

A struggle ensued, and the victim was cut on the ear, bicep and both knees before Riera-Gonzalez fled the scene, police said.

The victim told police the encounter was the product of a previous verbal altercation involving a comment made about his wife.

Riera-Gonzalez, a Lawrenceville resident, was ultimately arrested by Gwinnett police on Aug. 8 after his pickup truck was seen driving down Norcross Tucker Road with a flat tire. After a number of failed field sobriety tests, police said, he was charged with driving under the influence.

He remains in Gwinnett County Jail without bond.
