Football Preview: Lowndes at South

Lowndes Vikings (1-AAAAA)

Coach: Randy McPherson

2010 record: 10-3

South Gwinnett Comets (8-AAAAA)

Coach: John Small

2010 record: 9-3

Lowndes will make a rare trip to Gwinnett County tonight for its game against South Gwinnett. The Vikings have only played in Gwinnett twice with the last meeting a loss to Grayson in the 2008 state playoffs.

"We're excited to have them come here," South head coach John Small said.

The Comets went to Lowndes last year and struggled to move the ball and with turnovers before rallying in the fourth quarter to make the score close.

"You never want to put yourself in a hole. It was a little too late," Small said. "We want to start fast, play hard and finish strong."

South will have Mason Hart at quarterback after starter Jordan Ramey broke his arm in last week's scrimmage against Mill Creek. The Comets will have to rely on running back Jourdin Shiloh and three-year starter Darren Russell on the offensive line to help the unit move the ball.

Lowndes won three state championships in a four-year span from 2004-07 and features another highly talented team. Safety Josh Clemons is rated one of the state's top college prospects, while running back Mike Moore had 192 yards rushing and two TDs in last week's scrimmage against Thomas County. The Vikings still run the wing-T, but it's now out of the shotgun formation.

"They are solid across the board. They run the wing-T, but they also do some other things well on offense," Small said. "They are very similar to last year. Very big up front. It's a lot like what we see in our region."

Last meeting: Lowndes won 34-26 last year
