Pedestrian killed by train in Norcross

— Gwinnett police say a woman was struck and killed by a train before dawn Thursday near Norcross, while a male she was with jumped out of the way.

Gwinnett police spokesman Cpl. Edwin Ritter said officers responded at 5:45 a.m. to tracks near Jones Mill Road and Button Gwinnett Drive, a straight stretch of railway running parallel to Buford Highway. The female pedestrian was dead at the scene, and the male was uninjured, Ritter said.

Neither person was identified Thursday morning.

“Everything indicates that it was an accident,” said Ritter. “The male got out of the way; the female could not.”

Gwinnett police Sgt. Brian Reddy said the couple apparently had been trying to cross the tracks to a fast food restaurant. Ritter said police found two trains at the scene.

“It’s possible they thought all that noise was from the other train,” he said.

Ritter said the train that struck the woman was operated by Norfolk Southern. Police had cleared the scene and all roads were reopened before 11 a.m., he said.

A spokesperson with the Norfolk Southern Corp. was not immediately available for comment.
