Norcross Investigators were still trying to determine the cause Wednesday evening of a fire that destroyed a Norcross restaurant.
Gwinnett County firefighters responded to the strip mall at 5265 Jimmy Carter Blvd. just after 2 a.m. Wednesday, finding smoke coming from a restaurant called The Mughals, spokesman Capt. Tommy Rutledge said. Once inside, firefighters encountered heavy flames but were able to stop the blaze from spreading throughout the shopping center.
The restaurant was “gutted” and the roof over one corner was burned away, Rutledge said.
There was reportedly no one at the business when the fire department arrived, and no injuries were reported. Before the fire was brought under control at about 3:05 a.m., police evacuated people from a nearby business.
Rutledge said Wednesday night that the cause of the fire remained undetermined and under investigation, but no foul play was suspected.
“According to fire investigators, the blaze appears to have originated in the kitchen and spread throughout the rest of the business,” Rutledge said. “Flames spread undetected inside the restaurant until smoke became visible from outside the building and prompted called to 911.”
