Brookwood wins South softball tourney

SNELLVILLE -- Brookwood's fastpitch softball team remained unbeaten this past weekend by winning the Diamond Bracket of the South Gwinnett Tournament.

The Broncos (5-0) won three games Saturday to take the title, beating Archer 3-2, Lambert 7-0 and Mountain View 7-1.

Brandi Jones was the winning pitcher in the Archer and Mountain View games, also chipping in with a double and a run in the Archer win. Mandy Blackwell also went 2-for-3 with a double in that game.

Rachel Hill earned the win vs. Lambert and went 1-for-1 with two runs scored at the plate. Teammate Taylor Sexton added an RBI and a run scored.

In the Mountain View game, Taiylor Rinehart (2-for-4, double, run), Jenny Blackwell (2-for-2, double, two runs, RBI), Emily Brantley (2-for-4, two RBIs) and Ambree Muller (2-fro-2, double, two runs, RBI) also had big games.

Brookwood beat South Forsyth 10-0 and Alcovy 8-1 Friday night to reach the top bracket of the tourney. Susan Norris was a combined 4-for-6 in those games, while Hill and Jones each picked up a win at pitcher. Megan Litumbe (2-for-2, two doubles vs. South Forsyth), Rinehart (3-for-3, double vs. Alcovy) and Mandy Blackwell (2-for-3, double, four RBIs) also played well in the opening round.

SOFTBALL

Grayson 12, Lanier 5

SUGAR HILL -- Taylor Denton was 4-for-5 with three RBIs and three runs scored Monday night as Grayson opened its season with a 12-5 win over host Lanier.

The Rams also got two-hit nights from Shelby Smith (two RBIs), Kylie Klim and Niki Cook as part of a 14-hit attack. Breanna Ethridge pithed four innings and struck out four to earn the win, while freshman Jen Spangler closed the win by striking out two in three innings.

GAC wins Gold Bracket

NORCROSS -- Greater Atlanta Christian won the Gold Bracket of the South Gwinnett tourney this past weekend with three victories on Saturday -- 6-5 over Shiloh, 3-0 over Evans and 7-3 over Jefferson.

Sierra Lawrence powered the Spartans in five games at the tourney, going 8-for-11 with three doubles, a triple, two home runs, three RBIs and 10 runs scored.

She was 3-for-3 with a homer and two doubles in the Evans game, making a winner of starting pitcher Natalie deLatour, who also picked up two saves on Saturday in relief of Brianna Stewart, who picked up two pitching wins.

Krista Gustafson was a combined 5-for-7 with a double and an RBI in the Evans and Jefferson games and deLatour was 3-for-4 with a double and four RBIs vs. Jefferson. Courtney Czentnar went 4-for-6 with four runs scored and an RBI in the Shiloh and Jefferson games.

GAC (4-1) opened the tourney with a 1-0 loss to Peachtree Ridge, despite a two-hitter from deLatour, and an 11-5 win over Lanier. Stewart earned the win vs. Lanier and added an RBI triple, Gustafson was 2-for-3 with two doubles, two RBIs and two runs and Grace DeBoer was 1-for-2 with two runs scroed. Mary Johnson was a combined 2-for-4 in those two games.

Archer wins two of three

SNELLVILLE -- After losing a narrow 3-2 game to Region 8-AAAAA rival Brookwood on Saturday, Archer bounced back with wins over Mountain View and Lambert in the South Gwinnett tourney.

Kanani Cabrales powered the win over Mountain View with six RBIs and a home run during her 2-for-3 game. Alesha Mann was 2-for-3 with three runs scored in that game, while Holli Sturgill was 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Madison Wyngaert allowed six hits in five innings in a shutout win.

Alliyah Williams threw a six-inning, one-hitter in the Lambert win, while hitting a three-run homer and walking twice. Teammate Jenna Graham was 2-for-3 with a run.Katie Ethridge was 2-for-3 with an RBI in Archer's loss to Brookwood.

Duluth wins four of five

PEACHTREE CITY --Duluth went 4-1 in the Up the Creek Softball Tournament at McIntosh this past weekend behind pitcher Jeannie Perrucci, who went 3-1 and had 28 strikeouts. She also was 5-for-8 hitting.

Duluth beat Luella (3-0), McIntosh (6-1), Mundy's Mill (17-1) and Newnan (7-3) with its lone loss coming to North Cobb (5-1).

Casey Nellums led the Wildcats' offense, going 8-for-13 with six RBIs. Erin Lipps went 4-for-8 with a double and five RBIs, Gracie Delorenzo was 4-for-10 with a double and a triple, Kayla Brown was 5-for-8 with two doubles and Reina Sycamore was 4-for-9 for Duluth.

Shiloh goes 3-2

SNELLVILLE -- Shiloh went 3-2 in this past weekend's South Gwinnett tourney.

The Generals beat Druid Hills (16-1) and Jefferson County (9-0) in the opening round, then lost to GAC (6-5) and Jefferson (6-5) on Saturday. They closed Saturday's play with a 12-9 win over Evans.

VOLLEYBALL

Providence wins

King's Ridge tourney

ALPHARETTA -- Providence Christian won the Volleyball vs. Cancer Tournament this past weekend with a 4-1 record, beating host King's Ridge 25-23, 25-21 in the final match.

The Stars beat North Cobb twice and St. Francis in the tourney with a loss to Darlington.
