McCann set on return today

LAWRENCEVILLE -- In no way did Brian McCann qualify this statement: "I am definitely going to play tomorrow."

And that is the way the Atlanta Braves All-Star catcher emphatically ended his rehab with the Gwinnett Braves after catching five innings Saturday. On the disabled list since July 27 with a strained left oblique, McCann played two games for the G-Braves going 2-for-6 at the plate with a pair of RBIs and a home run blast to right center field. He only caught the second game, making a strong snap throw the first base but looking less confident down to second, allowing a pair of stolen bases.

"Early on I was a little bit guarded and every inning I got better and more comfortable with what I can and can't do," McCann said. "I felt good as the game went on.

"Today was a big test for me to be able to throw."

McCann said he made one final throw as hard as he could after he ended the fifth inning with a strikeout.

"It felt good," he said.

Other than a double play and a strikeout, McCann hit the ball hard in every at-bat over the two games, despite taking two weeks off to let his strained oblique rest.

"I am not worried about my swinging," he said. "I wasn't worried about my bat coming here it was just a matter of being able to throw and throw effectively."
