DULUTH -- Last weekend, Duluth celebrated the grand opening of an art supply store called Luv for Art owned by Bobbie Flowers, who was once an account manager.

"I was sitting behind a desk and it just didn't make me happy," Flowers said. "I always painted at home and when I ran across this opportunity, I had to take it."

As an artist, she would travel the long trip to Atlanta to buy quality supplies. She felt as though her community could use a shop closer to home and still have great materials, plus classes.

Flowers is in the works preparing classes for the store, including painting, photography, and drawing. Once a month, she would like to offer speciality classes in jewelry making and costume design.

She also plans to organize a variety of themed nights during the week, such as wine and painting, ladies' night, bridal parties and date nights.

"I want to welcome everybody," Flowers said. "I want people to have a place to create and feel the way I feel when I'm painting."

She began painting five years ago after going through a painful divorce.

"It was the thing that kept me loving life," Flowers said. "I could find peace and beauty in the colors, which kept me moving through the hard times."

Inside the shop, the exposed brick walls are adorned with paintings and photography from local artists, including some of her own work, and all pieces are on sale. Her style is abstract and contemporary.

"I love colors," Flowers said. "I love to see what they do when you move them together."

Behind the shop is a lawn with a bench swing and a large cigar Indian peering up to the sky. She hopes to offer classes outside when the weather becomes less humid.
