  • Location: American Classic Tavern is off Parkside Walk Lane at the intersection of Duluth Highway and Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road at the former Diggers location.

  • Atmosphere: The restaurant has a fun atmosphere for everyone, including children. It is a non-smoking establishment with a friendly staff and a game room with a pool table, dart board and arcade games.

The walls are covered with sports memorabilia, plus neon lights and signs advertising a variety of beers. The bar sits in the middle of the main room, completely open for guests to sit around, talk shop, and watch of the multitude of sports games on one of the 40 TVs hung throughout the restaurant.

Outside there is a patio with large windows and a beach volleyball court. Both will be open in the fall.

Families tend to dine during lunch or for an early dinner, while the late night crowd stays until last call.

Guests can join Texas Hold 'Em poker on Tuesday night and team trivia on Wednesday night to win house cash.

Young or old, there is something for everyone.

  • Menu: This is the main attraction. John Geng wanted to keep the food classic and his executive chef Shawn Meyer helped add a modern twist.

"I took things that I liked as a kid (from Iowa) and put it on the menu," Geng said. "I love catfish because I ate it every Friday as a staple ... and I loved tater tots as a kid."

There are 96 menu items including a range of burgers, sandwiches, ribs, pizzas, and even a hot dog menu, all made with locally grown, fresh produce.

The Tavern has a la carte sides -- everything from deviled eggs, macaroni and cheese, creamed corn and Spaghetti O's.

The restaurant has 21 beers on draft, including McSorley's Irish Black Lager -- a beer from New York City with a long, rich history. Order one for $4. It is served in two 8-ounce mugs.

"We definitely go through a lot of them," Geng said.
