DACULA — On Aug. 6, Sydney Morales, a junior at Dacula High School was crowned 2012 Miss Georgia High School America Queen.
Girls from all over the state attended the pageant for the title of Miss Georgia High School America and other prizes and opportunities.
Morales competed in interview, fun fashion, evening gown and on-stage question and was crowned the new queen at the end of the pageant.
It was Morales’ second attempt at the crown.
As Miss Georgia High School America, Morales has won up to a $1,000 scholarship and will represent Georgia at the National Miss High School America Pageant scheduled for March 2012 in San Antonio, Texas.
Morales enjoys playing violin in the Philharmonic orchestra, participating on her school’s tennis team and serving on the student council.
She is the founder of the Jeans for Teens program and an advocate for Gwinnett County Relay for Life, where she raised $6,000 in 2011.
Fundraiser raises money for CURE
SUWANEE — Cheeky restaurant in Suwanee and Forsyth was involved with CURE Childhood Cancer, a local nonprofit dedicated to conquering childhood cancer through research, education and support.
During the month of April, Cheeky restaurants of Suwanee and Forsyth sold 225 T-shirts and 847 in-memory cards to raise money for the local non-profit.
More than $1,000 in proceeds were donated to CURE in honor of the owner’s late sister, Karen McLean Crump, a devoted CURE volunteer.
Gas South seeks Braves fans
ATLANTA — Gas South has teamed with the Atlanta Braves to offer a lucky fan the chance to throw out the first pitch at a Braves game.
The winner of the Gas South First Pitch Sweepstakes will receive four game tickets and will throw out the first pitch as the Braves take on the Phillies Sept. 26 at Turner Field. Deadline to enter is Sept. 12.
“Being able to stand on the pitcher’s mound at Turner Field and throw out the first pitch is a once in a lifetime experience,” said Kevin Greiner, president and CEO of Gas South, the official gas provider of the Atlanta Braves.

Wellspring fundraiser Aug. 26
PEACHTREE CITY — The deadline to register for Wellspring Living’s 5K run to benefit the organization’s recovery homes and programs is Aug. 26.
The run draws more than 250 participants each year from around the Atlanta area.
Locally, Norcross restaurant grace17.20 has chosen to sponsor the event. During the month of August, the establishment will donate 10 percent of monthly profits as well.
Teams of 12 or more are encouraged to register and name their team by Aug. 26 in order to have the team’s name on their T-shirts.
Registration fee is $30. The run is scheduled for Sept. 17 at the Bridge Community Center, 225 Willowbend Road, Peachtree City. To register, visit www.wellspringliving.org.
Prizes will be given to the first and second place runners in each division. Each participant will receive a T-shirt and official time card.
