School system 'on target' for enrollment forecast

LAWRENCEVILLE -- Gwinnett County Public Schools' first enrollment count of the year put the student population at 156,959.

That's 5,500 less than the total projection for start of the 2011-2012 school year, but an official said the figure is typical this early in the school year.

The school system conducts several enrollment counts throughout the month of August. The first tally was on Tuesday. A final count is scheduled for Sept. 6.

Sloan Roach, director of communication, said the number counted this week "is very similar to what we usually see in terms of trends.

"Last year, we gained just over 5,000 students from the first count until that final count day," she said. "Based on preliminary numbers, we do feel like we'll be on target for that post-Labor Day enrollment forecast."

The target projection is 162,459.

Roach said system planners would continue to monitor growth and "do anticipate increases in student enrollment over the next few weeks."

The remaining counts are scheduled for Aug. 15, 22 and 29, and Sept. 6.

Enrollment for the 2010-2011 school year was tallied at 161,130 after Labor Day.

Historically, the number of students peaks during the fourth or fifth school month.
