LAWRENCEVILLE -- In an effort to stop drivers from passing school buses, officials announced Friday that a number of Gwinnett County police motorcycle officers will be following buses in the early weeks of the new school year.
Ten officers will form a special detail and follow buses on their normal routes starting Monday, focusing particularly on preventing the passing of school buses that are stopped to load and unload students.
Police spokesman Cpl. Jake Smith was not able to provide specific statistics Friday, but said that passing buses was "a big enough problem that a special detail seems like a good idea."
Smith was not sure how specific bus routes would be selected, but said they would be "throughout the entire county."
"Two weeks (of the detail) are planned," he said, "but if the officers feel that this is still a significant problem at the end of the period, the timeframe may be extended."
