BUFORD -- A 24-year-old woman who'd been swimming with friends drowned near a Buford dock in Lake Lanier late Wednesday, officials said.

Cumming resident Mary Elizabeth Davidson drowned near a private dock at a Buford home in the 6400 block of Samoa Way, said Hall County Fire Chief David Kimbrell.

Friends reported Davidson missing about 9 p.m. Emergency personnel searched the shoreline, while a Hall County rescue boat was en route.

Hall County rescue divers found Davidson's body about two minutes after arriving. She'd been missing about an hour, Kimbrell said.

"She was just at the edge of the dock in 18 feet of water," Kimbrell said.

Kimbrell said the group had been swimming all day, left to eat and returned shortly before Davidson disappeared. There was some confusion among friends whether she was last seen at the edge of the dock or swimming in the water, he said.

Friends reported the victim was epileptic, though it was unclear if that factored into her drowning, Kimbrell said. No foul play was suspected Thursday.

"So far everything's looking like this was a horrible accident," Kimbrell said.
