Recently reviewed films now playing in theaters:

* Cowboys & Aliens (PG-13) Director Jon Favreau recovers from the disaster that was "Iron Man 2" with this genre-bending mash-up that is far better than the title and trailers would indicate. The too serious Daniel Craig and sourpuss Harrison Ford head an impressive cast. 3 stars -- Michael Clark

* Crazy, Stupid, Love. (PG-13) A dream-team crack ensemble cast (led by Steve Carell and Ryan Gosling) makes the already pretty good script better than it is on paper and again, this film is far better -- and vastly different -- than the played-to-death trailers have indicated. 31/2 stars -- MC

* Snow Flower and the Secret Fan (PG-13) Its been 20 years and director Wayne Wang is still going to have to keep looking for a worthy bookend to his masterpiece "The Joy Luck Club." The filmmakers add insult to injury by unnecessarily padding the novel on which it is based. 11/2 stars -- MC

* A Better Life (PG-13) Apart from a final scene that nearly torpedoes everything, this low-key drama from director Chris Weitz examines the ultra-touchy issue of illegal immigration with an economical non-judgmental eye, emotional depth and amazing apolitical neutrality. 3 stars -- MC

* Friends with Benefits (R) Falling short of expected opening weekend box-office numbers, "FWB" will likely enjoy a healthy afterlife on home video thanks mostly to the sizzling chemistry between co-leads Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis and a superb supporting cast. 3 stars -- MC

* Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 (PG-13) Breaking every possible box office record on opening weekend, this final "Potter" epic could go on to become the highest-grossing film of all time. Though not without faults, it takes its exit with style, grace and class. 3 stars -- MC
