LAWRENCEVILLE -- A football player from Archer High School who was transported to a local hospital Tuesday morning during practice is on the mend, according to an official with Gwinnett County Public Schools.

Sloan Roach said transporting the student was precautionary.

"The word we received was that the student was doing fine," Roach said.

She said the student had been experiencing "some cramping.

"During these very hot times of year, we have procedures in place to help keep student athletes and other students involved in activities outside safe during extreme heat."

Schools measure the heat index using a flag system often during practice or any other outdoor activity, Roach said.

Many football practices were held during the morning this week in an attempt to cope with the unseasonably warm weather.

A local forecaster reported that it topped off at 95 degrees Tuesday with a heat index of 101 degrees.

The forecast for today called for a high of 99 degrees, said Jon Richards. "We're toying with the record for that date," he added.

The record was set in 1957 at 99 degrees.

Warm temperatures will drop just slightly Thursday with a 30 percent chance of rain, Richards said.
