M.E. "Ben" Benoit of Duluth, GA died Monday, April 25, 2011 at the age of 84. Ben was the son of the late Charles and Florence Benoit of Long Island, NY. He served active duty aboard the U.S.S. Colonial on Asiatic Pacific in the US Navy during World War II. After his honorable discharge, Ben's interest in engineering led him to the Missouri School of Mines in Rolla, MO. Here he was a member of the Varsity Cross County and Track team, which allowed him to pursue his love of running. After receiving a BS degree in Mining Engineering, Ben moved to Sandersville, GA to begin his career. In Sandersville, engineering led Ben to another love, Sarah, who came to be his beloved wife of 59 years. Ben was a devoted employee, who after 30 years of work at Engelhard Corporation, retired as Assistant General Manager. A devout Christian, he was an ordained Deacon at Irwinton Baptist Church. He taught Sunday school and enjoyed serving as a greeter at church, feeling everyone should receive a warm welcome and handshake. He amused his friends with quick wit and sense of humor. Being an avid Georgia Bulldog fan, he attended all home games for 20 years. Ben is survived in loving memory by his wife Sarah, his children Pat (Loring) Wadley, Charles (Margie) Benoit, and Susan (Ed) Metzger. His grandchildren are Ashlyn and Blakely Wadley, Britt and John Benoit, and Chip, Taylor, and Clay Metzger. The funeral service will be held Thursday, April 28, 2011 at 2 PM at Bill Head Funeral Home, Duluth Chapel, with the Rev. Dick Baker and Dr. Mark Hearn officiating. Burial will follow at Eternal Hills Memory Gardens, 3594 Stone Mountain Highway, Snellville, GA 30039. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to First Baptist Duluth, 2908 Hwy. 120, Duluth, GA 30096.
