Suwanee PD earns CALEA certification

SUWANEE -- Lou Dekmar, a member of the LaGrange Police Department and chairman of the Commission for Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies was on hand during Tuesday's City Council meeting in Suwanee to present police chief Mike Jones, Mayor Dave Williams, the police department, and other city staffers with a plaque honoring the city's recent CALEA certification.

"Having been an assessor for almost 10 years and commissioner for 7 years, I have had the opportunity to write or review hundreds of assessment reports ... the Suwanee Police Department's assessment report clearly describes an agency committed to community policing and excellent law enforcement services," Dekmar said.

"This is an exciting time for us, for everyone at city hall," Jones said Tuesday.

Peachtree Ridge students recognized for gardening achievements

Several Peachtree Ridge students in Carolyn Walters' class were recognized for their outstanding gardening achievements at Harvest Farm Community Garden on Tuesday evening, with Williams presenting each student a certificate of appreciation for their contribution to Suwanee's community garden.

Rosalie Tubre, a master gardener and key component of the garden's success, has worked with the class for over a year, teaching them gardening techniques and most recently, landscaping skills. The students will earn their Junior Master Gardener certification next month, thanks to their work and accomplishments in the garden.

"It was amazing how much of an improvement this (landscaping project) is, like night and day," Williams said.

Goodman appointed to library board

City Councilman Dick Goodman has been appointed by County Commission Chairwoman Charlotte Nash to the county's library board. His term will last as long as Nash's will as county commissioner. According to Goodman, the combination of advancing technology and slimmer budgets presents a real challenge to the county's library system. "The decisions we make will affect many people," Goodman said.

Pedestrian Bicycle Plan adopted

Council members voted unanimously Tuesday to adopt the April 18 draft of the city's Pedestrian Bicycle Plan, formerly known as the Alternative Transportation Plan. The plan is available for review on the city's website, www.suwanee.com.
