NORCROSS — A suspected drunk driver crossed over the median and hit another car head-on Saturday night in Norcross, killing one and injuring several others.
Gwinnett County emergency personnel responded to the scene near the intersection of Jimmy Carter Boulevard and Rockbridge Court just after 8:30 p.m., fire department spokesman Lt. Eric Eberly said.
According to Det. James Flanagan of Gwinnett police’s accident investigation unit, a driver crossed the median while going eastbound on Jimmy Carter Boulevard, hitting another car head-on before a third vehicle struck that one.
Using the jaws of life, firefighters quickly extracted a man and a woman before transporting them in critical condition to Gwinnett Medical Center in Lawrenceville. They were transported within 15 minutes of emergency crews arriving, Eberly said.
Another woman, the driver of the first vehicle struck, was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials had not identified her or any of the other victims as of press time Saturday night.
The driver that crossed the median is one of those in critical condition, Flanagan said. Alcohol may have been a factor in the crash that left her vehicle upside down.
“We suspect the driver that crossed over the median was under the influence of alcohol,” Flanagan said, “but we are awaiting test results.”
Two other victims were also treated for minor injuries and released, Eberly said.
Jimmy Carter Boulevard was temporarily shut down to westbound traffic as the Gwinnett Police Department’s accident investigation unit worked the scene.
