The King's Speech (Blu-ray) (R)
Movie: 4 stars out of 4 Discs: 3 1/2 stars out of 4 Winner of four Oscars including Best Picture, “The King’s Speech” fits squarely into both the “spiritual uplift” and “British period piece” drama sub-genres, which is both a blessing and a curse. It’s a high-end production with art-house flourishes and is emotionally manipulative. On the flip side it also proves that truth is indeed stranger than fiction, and if someone were to make this story up out of whole cloth it would be laughable. Colin Firth delivers the performance of his career as King George VI, a man who must overcome a debilitating stutter while assuming the British crown under the most bizarre of circumstances. Technical specs: aspect ratios: mixed Widescreen (1.78:1/1080p), audio: English (DT-HD MA 5.1), subtitles: English and Spanish. Special features include: • Director commentary • Making-of featurette • Q&A with the director and cast (Anchor Bay, $39.99)More like this story
