Prep Roundup: Dacula one win away from Region 8-AAAAA soccer title

LILBURN -- Dacula moved one step closer to winning the Region 8-AAAAA title by edging Berkmar 1-0 on Tuesday night. The Falcons (12-4-1, 6-1) will capture the region title with a win in their next game against Central Gwinnett.

Ado Junuzovic scored in the 27th minute for the game's lone goal, and the defense made it stand, getting strong play from James Fukartas, Santiago Montoya, Danny Garcia, Edgar Cruz, Landon Kinsey and Davian McEwan.

BOYS SOCCER

Brookwood 5, Shiloh 0

SNELLVILLE -- Brookwood concluded its Region 8-AAAAA schedule Tuesday with a 5-0 shutout over Shiloh.

Brookwood (13-3, 7-1) received one goal each from Adrian Alabi, Pete Nkengasong, Scott Eidson, Chris Peterson and Brahan Gamarra, while keeper Jonathan Brown recorded the shutout.

Blessed Trinity 3, Buford 0

ROSWELL -- Blessed Trinity turned in a great defensive effort Tuesday as the Titans topped Buford 3-0.

The win secured the fourth seed in Region 6-AA and a spot in the Class AA state playoffs for the Titans, while Buford (9-6-2, 4-4) was bumped out of playoff contention. Buford ended the night with just one shot on goal.

Paideia 3, Providence 2

ATLANTA -- Paideia scored with about three minutes left in the second overtime Tuesday to top Providence 3-2 and come away with the Region 4-A title.

Providence, ranked No. 1 Class A, scored twice in the first half, getting one goal each from Ted Perry and Caleb McQuaig.

Providence (13-5, 10-2) finished the regular season second in the region and will open the Class A state playoffs at home on May 3.

Wesleyan 2, Fellowship 0

NORCROSS -- Wesleyan locked up the No. 3 seed in Region 4-A on Tuesday with a 2-0 over Fellowship Christian. The Wolves (10-8, 8-4) will open the Class A state playoffs at home on April 29.

Wesleyan picked up both goals in the second half, with the first by Sam Brehmer off an assist from Zach Jones and the second from Garrett Busch off a feed from Zam Straker. Eric Sunderman helped keep Fellowship scoreless with nine saves.

GIRLS SOCCER

Brookwood 10, Shiloh 0

SNELLVILLE -- Eight different players scored for Brookwood on Tuesday as the Broncos flew past Shiloh 10-0 in Region 8-AAAAA.

Washida Blackman led the way for Brookwood (14-3, 8-0) with three goals, while Allie Vrtachnik, Rachael Schmidt, Fiorella Gamarra, Kim Fincher, Meredith Mellard, Julia Bassell and Avery Lee each scored one. The shutout went to keeper Marena Kardatzke, who had two saves.

Archer 2, Grayson 1

LOGANVILLE -- Olivia Sabina of Archer scored with 1:20 left in the second overtime Tuesday to lift the Tigers 2-1 over Grayson, the eighth ranked team in Class AAAAA.

Scoring in regulation for Archer was Caroline Johnston. The win improved Archer to 8-4-2 overall and 4-4 in Region 8-AAAAA.

Dacula 6, Berkmar 0

LILBURN -- Katie McAdams had three goals with one assist Tuesday to lead Dacula 6-0 over Berkmar in Region 8-AAAAA.

Other contributors on offense were Ruva Chimedza (one goal), Lauren Vick (one goal and assist) and Valeria Bermeo (goal, two assists), while the defense was led by keeper Madison Glunn. Dacula improved to 11-5 overall and 4-3 in the region.

Fellowship Christian 1, Wesleyan 0

NORCROSS -- Wesleyan closed out its regular season with by pushing top-ranked Fellowship Christian to the limit as Fellowship needed overtime to post a 1-0 win over the Wolves on Tuesday.

Wesleyan, which fell to 10-7-1, will be the third seed out of Region 4 and will host the fourth seed from Region 5 next Thursday in the first round of the Class A state playoffs.

Killian Hill 3, King's Way 1

DOUGLASVILLE -- Killian Hill topped King's Way Christian 3-1 Tuesday to win the GCAA North Region title. Killian Hill (13-1) will be at home next Tuesday in the GCAA state semifinals.

Paige Williams led the attack on Tuesday with two goals, while Katie Graff scored one.

BASEBALL

Buford 2, Westminster 0

BUFORD -- Buford's Jake Burnette pitched seven strong innings Tuesday, giving up just four hits with seven strikeouts as the Wolves downed Westminster 2-0 in Region 6-AA.

Mason Gentry was the spark on offense for Buford (17-3, 11-1), going 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI, while Adam Hampton added a hit and an RBI.

Decatur 5, GAC 3

DECATUR -- Greater Atlanta Christian received a strong start from pitcher John LaMay, but the Spartan offense didn't deliver as Decatur held on for a 5-3 win.

The loss put GAC at 14-8 overall and 7-5 in Region 6-AA.

Wesleyan 14, Pinecrest 3

NORCROSS -- Jeremy Shirley had two hits, including a grand slam, Tuesday in leading Wesleyan 14-3 in five innings over Pinecrest Academy in Region 5-A.

Shirley also pitched four innings of one-hit ball for the win. Mason Colquitt had a big day at the plate, delivering three hits with two homers and four RBIs.

Wesleyan (14-6, 9-2) also posted a 4-2 win over region rival Providence on Monday night, getting a two-run homer in the top of the eighth from Will Anderson. Gardner Heaner also had three hits and scored three runs in the Providence win, while Jamie Stark allowed one hit in four relief innings for the win.

Hebron 13, Athens Christian 2

DACULA -- Hebron won its 20th straight game Friday with a 13-2 defeat of Athens Christian in five innings.

Danny Lockhart went 4-for-4 with three home runs and five RBIs, while Justin Bagley provided a pinch-hit grand slam.

P.J. Westbury added a triple with two runs, while Kevin Burgee (5-1) pitched four scoreless innings with six strikeouts for the win. Hebron improved to 21-1 overall and 16-0 in Region 8-A.

Killian Hill 16, King's Way 4

DOUGLASVILLE -- Killian Hill scored seven runs in the first inning and never looked back en route to a 16-4 win over King's Way on Tuesday, giving Killian Hill the GCAA Region 1 championship.

Kyle Bailey (7-1) pitched six innings for the win, giving up four runs (two earned) on four hits with six strikeouts. He also went 3-for-4 at the plate with a home run and two RBIs.

Austin Parks also had two doubles and two RBIs, while J.R. Hinson (2-for-4, two RBIs) and Alex Attebery (2-for-4, RBI) each contributed.

BOYS TENNIS

Peachtree Ridge ousted by Lassiter

SUWANEE -- Lassiter held on for a 3-2 win over Peachtree Ridge in the first round of the Class AAAAA state playoffs on Tuesday.

The Lions picked up their points from a No. 1 singles win from Alex Makarenko and a No. 1 doubles win by Jacob Kukler and Ian Krpo.

Brookwood defeats Roswell

SNELLVILLE -- Brookwood swept Roswell 3-0 Tuesday in first round action of the Class AAAAA state tournament.

Singles winners were No. 1 Randy Phillips and No. 2 Mark Guentert with Drew Wendel and Matt Jones winning No. 1 doubles.

GAC nips North Oconee in first round

BOGART -- Greater Atlanta Christian picked up one singles win and two doubles wins Tuesday to get past North Oconee 3-2 in the opening round of the Class AA state playoffs.

Doubles winners for GAC (9-8) were Jake Montgomery and Alex Soh at No. 1 and Josh Mitchell and Andrew Kim at No. 2, while David Burdette took the No. 1 singles match.

Hebron wins in first round of state

DACULA -- Hebron scored a win in the first round of the Class A state tournament on Tuesday with a 3-1 win over First Presbyterian Day School.

Hebron's points came from singles wins by Wes Mendoza, Jerod Beck and Josh Beck.

GIRLS TENNIS

Norcross advances to second round

WOODSTOCK -- Norcross earned a spot in the second round of the Class AAAAA state tournament with a 3-1 win in the opening round Tuesday over Etowah.

Winning in singles action for Norcross (14-5) was Cameron Williams at No. 1 and Zooha Vellanki at No. 3, while the No. 2 doubles team of Lindsay Holmes and Maria Lackey also won.

Norcross, the No. 3 seed from Region 7, will play the Brookwood-Northview winner next week in the second round.

Peachtree Ridge sweeps Woodstock

SUWANEE -- It was a good opening round of the Class AAAAA state playoffs for Peachtree Ridge on Tuesday as the Lions swept Woodstock 3-0. The win puts Peachtree Ridge (16-1) into the second round, where it will play the Alpharetta-Grayson winner next week.

Singles winners Tuesday were No. 1 Jessica Northcutt and No. 2 Mary Jeremiah. Winning at No. 1 doubles was Ali Mill and Abby Owens.

North Oconee ends GAC's season

BOGART -- Greater Atlanta Christian fell to North Oconee 3-1 Tuesday in the opening round of the Class AA state playoffs.

Winning at No. 2 singles for GAC's points were Kathryn Osbon and Anna Bass.

BOYS LACROSSE

Peachtree Ridge 11, Woodstock 8

SUWANEE -- Peachtree Ridge keeper Greg Rose had 11 saves Tuesday in helping the Lions to an 11-8 win over Woodstock.

Offensively, the Lions (12-2) were led by Cory Hall with five goals and an assist and Michael Ruffcorn with two goals and an assist. Tyler Boots chipped in three assists and a goal, with Tanner Botts adding a goal and an assist.

Adding one goal each for the Lions were Miller Hollstein and Steven Lee.

Etowah 14, Collins Hill 2

SUWANEE -- Etowah downed Collins Hill 14-2 Tuesday night.

Abe Heller had a hand on both goals for Collins Hill (6-6, 4-0) by scoring one and assisting the other. That assist went to Kyle Burke, while keeper Alex Squires finished with 19 saves.

North 15, Duluth 6

SUWANEE -- Adam Printz recorded four goals and three assists Tuesday in leading North Gwinnett 15-6 over Duluth.

Ronnie Adams added four goals for North (6-7), while James Shimkus and Joe Whitaker each scored two. Cooper Herren saved eight shots in the second half at keeper.

Duluth was led by two goals each from Ben Loyal, Erik Brewer and Brandon Eckard, while Charlie Hall had three assists.

Lambert 13, Wesleyan 2

NORCROSS -- Lambert defeated Wesleyan 13-2 Tuesday night.

Goals for the Wolves (7-7) were scored by Harrison Cheeley and Connor Breslin.

GIRLS LACROSSE

North 8, Duluth 7

SUWANEE -- Ashleigh Clark scored five goals and collected eight ground balls on Tuesday in helping North Gwinnett nip Duluth 8-7.

Kylee Thurman added four ground balls, a goal and an assist for North (6-8, 2-3), while keeper Mehndi Patel saved 12 shots. Katie Varret added eight ground balls with a goal, while Lauren Aycock added a goal.

BOYS GOLF

Wolves, Papciak win region

WOODSTOCK -- Spencer Papciak won the individual title Tuesday and led Wesleyan to the Region 5-A championship at Capital City Club-Crabapple.

Papciak's first-place round was 73 as the Wolves shot 301, good for an eight-stroke victory over runner-up Holy Innocents'.

GIRLS GOLF

Hebron dominates in 8-A repeat

ROYSTON -- Led by Darby Gentry's 80, Hebron Christian's girls golf team dominated to win its second straight Region 8-A championship Tuesday at Highland Walk.

Gentry's first-place finish made Hebron the runaway champion, though her teammates finished second through fourth, giving the Lions a sweep of the top four spots. Lacynn Heflin (96), Reece Brooks (97) and Amber Sliger (98) teamed up with Gentry for the landslide victory.

Wesleyan, Blair win region titles

WOODSTOCK -- Low medalist Taylor Blair fired a 77 Tuesday, leading the Wesleyan girls golf team to the Region 5-A championship at Capital City Club-Crabapple.

The Wolves' total of 193 gave them a comfortable win over runner-up Holy Innocents'.
