DULUTH — Police believe unrequited desire led a Duluth man to shoot a married woman whom he was interested in courting three times Tuesday night.
The victim, Maria Jiminez-Alcara, 33, was hospitalized in critical but stable condition after police found her at the Madison at Breckinridge Apartments about 10:40 p.m. She was visiting a family member who is roommates with the shooting suspect, Miguel Aguilar-Guerrero, 32, said Gwinnett police spokesman Cpl. Jake Smith.
Police responded to the complex in the 3400 block of Breckinridge Boulevard to find Aguilar-Guerrero holding a pistol. Officers were able to arrest him without incident, Smith said.
Jiminez-Alcara knew her assailant, who asked her to leave her husband before shots rang out, Smith said.
“It was apparently the suspect’s desire that he and the victim be together,” Smith said.
Aguilar-Guerrero is being held without bond at the Gwinnett County Jail. He’s charged with aggravated assault, possession of a weapon during the commission of a crime and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Aguilar-Guerrero is being held for federal immigration authorities. Jail records indicate he is employed as a roofer.
