The color of today’s Daily Post — and that of our online product, www.gwinnettdailypost.com — should grab your attention. That’s our hope and the idea behind the “Read Pink” edition.
This is the second year that we’ve gone pink on Oct. 1, our way of helping kick off Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In the fight against breast cancer — which the National Cancer Institute says affects 1 in 8 women — early detection is key. In that vein, we hope today’s pink paper serves as a reminder to our readers to get checked.
Nearly 200,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year, according to the National Cancer Institute, and more than 30 percent of women will receive that diagnosis after the cancer has spread beyond the localized stage. Underscoring the importance of getting checked is this statistic — The five-year survival rate of breast cancer is 98 percent when detected early.
As part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Daily Post is inviting readers and advertisers to join in the fight. We will donate half ($49.50) of each annual subscription that is purchased as part of our “Read Pink” campaign. And a portion of advertising proceeds from today’s paper will also be donated.
Last year the Daily Post donated $5,000 to the Sport of Giving, a Gwinnett-based nonprofit group dedicated to breast cancer care and prevention. This year’s proceeds will be donated to the local chapter of the American Cancer Society.
The stories you’ll read in today’s “Read Pink” edition, featuring survivors Teresa Mayfield and Cavell Dudley, are inspiring. And we hope they also provide a poignant reminder of the importance of early detection.
