Teacher of the Year finalists selected

SUWANEE — Gwinnett County Public Schools has narrowed its search for this school year’s top educator to 25 professionals.

The school system announced Tuesday the names of the 25 semifinalists for the 2011 Gwinnett County Teacher of the Year honor.

The group of 15 elementary, five middle and five high school teachers was selected from the initial list of 123 local school Teachers of the Year who were nominated by their colleagues.

A selection committee — made up of teachers, central office personnel, and administrators — will now consider the semifinalists’ applications and answers to a set of additional questions to determine six finalists.

The district winner will be announced Nov. 4 during a banquet honoring all of the Teachers of the Year.

This year’s semifinalists are:

• Bay Creek Middle: Debbie Trevino, eighth-grade gifted language arts teacher

• Brookwood High: Kim Hamman, ninth-grade gifted biology teacher

• Camp Creek Elementary: Stephanie S. Reid, second-grade teacher

• Cedar Hill Elementary: Farrah T. Jones, music and chorus teacher

• Collins Hill High: Jon Aldrich, Advanced Placement U.S. History and Advanced Placement Government teacher

• Cooper Elementary: Susan Yost Keeney, special education teacher (self-contained moderate intellectual disabilities

• Corley Elementary: Hope Abraham, third-grade teacher

• Craig Elementary: Heidi Jones, literacy coach

• Fort Daniel Elementary: Kathy R. Williams, local school technology coordinator

• Freeman’s Mill Elementary: Kelli McGinnis Boudreaux, fifth-grade special education teacher

• Gwin Oaks Elementary: Bonnie Lavine, special education teacher (severe and profound intellectual disabilities)

• Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science, and Technology: John Willis, ninth-grade physics teacher

• Jackson Elementary: Tammy Knox, second-grade teacher

• McConnell Middle: Dottie Wilson, eighth-grade gifted mathematics teacher

• Mulberry Elementary: Julie Bailey, fifth-grade teacher

• North Gwinnett High: Katie Saldarriaga, English to Speakers of Other Languages social studies teacher

• Osborne Middle: Sergio Parra, Spanish teacher

• Parkview High: Steve Kuninsky, honors, gifted and Advanced Placement Biology teacher

• Peachtree Elementary: Judy Camp, fifth-grade teacher

• Radloff Middle: Jennifer Helfrich, media specialist

• Shiloh Elementary: Venetia Lowe, fifth-grade teacher

• Shiloh Middle: Rayvin C. Guyton, seventh-grade special education mathematics teacher

• Simonton Elementary: Katie Sample, literacy coach
