LAWRENCEVILLE — Gwinnett’s frailest residents now will have help getting to the doctor.

A new transportation voucher grant program will help seniors and disabled residents get around.

Commissioners recently accepted an $84,745 New Freedom Act Grant from the Atlanta Regional Commission and MARTA.

Along with $39,731 in matching county funds, the money will help up to 80 seniors currently on a waiting list for help with transportation assistance to attend medical appointments.

“This grant will allow us to set up a voucher system which will help seniors and persons with disabilities arrange transportation at their convenience,” said Linda Bailey, Gwinnett County Senior Services manager. “We hope to be able to offer these transportation vouchers to our seniors within six months.”

The program is part of the Gwinnett County Senior Services operation, which offers services such as meal delivery, respite care and homemaking and operates three senior centers in Lawrenceville, Norcross and Buford.
