Joann Baker

Joann Hildegard Schauf Smith Baker, age 82 of Atlanta, GA, went to see the Lord Friday, September 24, 2010, just weeks after her twelfth grandchild was born. Jody was a Christmas Day baby in 1927 in Wichita, Kansas. She was one of six children born to William and Elizabeth Schauf. At 19 she married Willis Leon Smith and had two children, David and Barbara, before Willis passed away in 1953. She then married Rex E. Baker in 1955 and moved to Phoenix, Arizona where they had four children; Mark, Steve, Dean and Donna. The family moved to Atlanta in 1967. In 1970 Rex had a tragic bicycle accident and a few years later Jody was once again left with children to raise and no visible means of support. Buoyed by her faith in Jesus Christ, she found work and weathered the storm in her typical courageous fashion. She dedicated her life to others and after her own children were grown took in street kids and made a difference in many young lives. After retirement Jody became a minister of God and took on several projects, including prison ministry and counseling those in need. She was a Christian in the true sense of the Word and loved by all. Jody is survived by her brother Dale and his wife, Vivian, her sister Patsy and her husband, Bill, children David Baker and his wife, Lisa, Barbara Penzien and her husband, Jim, Mark Baker and his wife, Tinsley, Steve Baker and his wife, Cathy, Dean Baker and wife, Penny, and Donna Acree, twelve grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Memorial services will be held Saturday, October 2 at 2:00pm at Hope & Life Fellowship Church, Snellville, GA. The family will receive friends Saturday from 1:00pm until service time, at the church. The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 1925 Century Blvd NE, Suite 10, Atlanta, Georgia 30345-3315, in memory of Joann Hildegard Schauf Smith Baker. Condolences may be sent or viewed at Tom M. Wages Funeral Service, LLC, Snellville Chapel, 770-979-3200
