NORCROSS -- A 44-year-old woman died Saturday evening from injuries she sustained in a fire at her Norcross apartment complex, authorities said.
The blaze caused extensive damage to the interior of the unit where the fire originated, Gwinnett County Fire Department spokesman Lt. Eric Eberly said. A neighbor called 911 about 5 p.m. when he saw fire coming from the second floor at the Barrington Hills Apartments on Chelsea Park Lane in Norcross.
Arriving firefighters experienced a delay in getting into the complex because the main entrance was closed due to a sinkhole, Eberly said. Still, fire crews were able to contain the blaze to the unit of origin, he said.
Firefighters removed the woman from the apartment where the fire broke out, Eberly said. The woman's name was not released Saturday evening because her next of kin had not yet been notified of her death.
The woman was aggressively treated for her injuries and transported to an area hospital, but she was pronounced dead soon after arrival, Eberly said.
No other injuries were reported, and no firefighters were hurt in the incident.
The cause of the fire was not immediately available.
