BUFORD — Grace Leah Baughn recorded her 1,000th kill as Wesleyan swept the Buford pool of the Gwinnett County Championships on Thursday.
The Wolves (22-13) and Grayson advanced to the gold bracket of the tournament to be held at Suwanee Sports Academy on Saturday. Wesleyan beat Buford 25-17, 25-19, Duluth 25-8, 25-9 and Grayson 25-8, 25-19. Baughn finished with 23 kills and nine digs. Jennifer Miller had 14 digs. Alana Broe finished with 12 kills, while Ansley Maughon added nine kills. Natalie Conner had 8 aces.
The Rams also advanced with their wins over Buford and Duluth.
Buford (29-7) beat Duluth 25-10, 25-8 in its other match. Maggie Roper led the Wolves with 20 digs and 16 kills. Liz Darden finished with 28 digs. Jessica Falletta added 13 digs, seven aces and seven kills.
Mill Creek goes 3-0, Providence 2-1
HOSCHTON — Mill Creek went unbeaten during pool play of the Gwinnett County Championships on Thursday.
The host Hawks (18-13) beat Archer 25-16, 25-14, Providence 25-20, 25-15 and Meadowcreek 25-7, 25-16. Kim Brody led with 26 kills. Ma’Tia Hughes added 17 kills, while Jordan Rooks finished with six aces. Mill Creek and Providence advanced to the gold bracket of the tournament to be held at Suwanee Sports Academy on Saturday. The Stars (19-10) beat Meadowcreek 25-17, 25-9 and Archer 23-25, 25-28, 25-20.
Brookwood sweeps pool, Norcross 2nd
SNELLVILLE — Brookwood advanced to the gold bracket of the Gwinnett County Championships after going 3-0 in its pool Thursday. The host Broncos (22-13) beat Central Gwinnett 25-9, 25-8, Norcross 25-17, 25-23 and South Gwinnett 25-15, 25-5. Jacqueline Portz finished with 21 assists and 10 aces. Katie Mallow added 21 kills, while Katie Kraft had 15 digs.
The Blue Devils will also play in the gold bracket Saturday at Suwanee Sports Academy with wins over South and Central. Sarah Snider finished with 10 kills and 10 aces for Norcross (12-9). Alex DeMercy added 12 kills and eight aces.
Hebron, Parkview advance
DACULA — Hebron swept its way to the gold bracket of the Gwinnett County Championships on Thursday.
The Lions (30-4) went 3-0 in their pool with wins over Collins Hill 25-21, 25-23, Parkview 25-14, 25-18 and Mountain View 25-10, 25-7. Courtney Bishop led with 20 kills, while Maddi Roof had 15 kills and Mollie Russel added 13 kills. Elise Murray had 15 kills and seven blocks. Her sister, Eden, finished the night with 20 assists. Savannah Blalock led with 22 assists.
Parkview went 2-1 and also advanced to the gold bracket Saturday at Suwanee Sports Academy. The Panthers beat Mountain View 25-13, 22-25, 25-15 and Collins Hill 26-24, 25-19. Katie Carroll led Parkview with 51 assists, 30 digs, five kills and three blocks. Jessica Mann added 19 kills, while Emily Christman finishes with 14 kills and 13 digs. Kelly Hayden added 44 digs, three aces and two kills. Sammi Bosler had 17 digs and five aces.
The Eagles beat Mountain View 25-14, 25-8 in their third match. Katherine Ahlswede led the Eagles (22-10) with 48 assists, 11 aces, 17 digs and seven kills. Kelly Carelson added 20 kills and 14 digs. Sarah Stone added 20 digs, while Liz Topoleski had 12 digs. Erin Ensley finished with 12 kills and 13 digs. T.C. Cobb had four blocks and six kills.
North, GAC earn top spots in pool
SUWANEE — North Gwinnett went 3-0 and Greater Atlanta Christian went 2-1 in pool play of the Gwinnett County Championships on Thursday. The Bulldogs beat the Spartans (18-11) 25-16, 14-25, 26-24. GAC picked up wins against Berkmar 25-7, 25-10 and Dacula 25-6, 25-12. Janaya Simmons finished with 18 kills and 24 digs. Morgan McKnight added 16 kills. Ali Cox had 41⁄2 blocks. Rachel Waldrop dished out 51 assists to go with 13 aces. Catherine Chason finished with 25 digs and six aces.
North and GAC will play in the gold bracket of the tournament Saturday at Suwanee Sports Academy.
North 3, Peachtree Ridge 2
SUWANEE — Alex McDavid went 3-for-3 with a double as North Gwinnett held off Peachtree Ridge 3-2 Thursday.
Tori Freedman was 2-for-2 with a double for the Bulldogs (18-6-1, 7-3). Sydney O’Neill went 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Lacey Najafi was also 2-for-4.
Emily Wood (6-3) pitched a complete game for the win. She allowed five hits and struck out two. Losing pitcher Sarah Walker also went the distance for the Lions (14-11, 6-5). She allowed one earned run off nine hits. Walker also went 3-for-3 at the plate. Ashley Sawdey added two hits and an RBI.
Collins Hill 3, Duluth 0
SUWANEE — Kayla Floor pitched a two-hit shutout to lead Collins Hill over Duluth 3-0 Thursday.
Floor (13-2) struck out 10 for the Eagles (21-2-1, 9-1). Mckenzie Halstead went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Christina Parham also had two hits.
Jeanie Perrucci was the losing pitcher. She allowed no earned runs off three hits and seven walks to go with two strikeouts. Perrucci and Kooker each had one hit for the Wildcats (11-13, 3-7).
Brookwood 4, Archer 1
SNELLVILLE — Brookwood clinched the top seed in the Region 8-AAAAA tournament by beating Archer 4-1 Thursday.
Rachel Hill allowed two hits and struck out one in five innings to get the win. Brandi Jones struck out five in the last two innings to get the save. Megan Litumbe had two hits and two RBIs for the Broncos (22-5). Jessica Neidigh added two hits and two runs to go with a stolen base. Mandy Blackwell had two RBIs.
Grayson 5, Lassiter 3
MARIETTA — Kananai Cabrales pitched a complete game with nine strikeouts to lead Grayson over Lassiter 5-3 Thursday.
Rachel McElory went 4-for-4 to lead the Rams’ (13-8-1) offense. Taylor Denton had two hits and three stolen bases. Shelby Smith went 2-for-3.
Parkview 6, Shiloh 2
LILBURN — Parkview won its final region game, beating Shiloh 6-2 Thursday.
Winning pitcher Amanda Chambers (11-3) struck out 10, allowing four hits in seven innings. She was also 2-for-3 and the plate. Morgan Robinson (2-for-4, 2 RBIs) and Caitlin McClure (2-for-3, RBI) each hit solo homers for the Panthers (16-6, 6-1). Mia Marshall added two hits and an RBI.
Lanier 12, Gainesville 0
SUGAR HILL — Sisters Hannah and Holland Coursey combined to go 5-for-5 to lead Lanier to a 12-0 win in four innings over Gainesville.
Hannah drove in five runs off three hits for the Longhorns (7-11, 5-5). Holland added two hits and three runs. Lauren Pettit was also 2-for-2 with three runs scored. Ciera Fackler and Keisha Stone each went 1-for-2 with a run. Stone (2-5) was also the winning pitcher. She pitched a four-hit shutout with five strikeouts.
Dacula 8, South 0
DACULA — Dacula blanked South Gwinnett 8-0 in five innings Thursday.
Taryn Anthony and Katelyn Daniels each had three hits and an RBI for the Falcons (9-15). Shania Norman was 2-for-3 and Amber Carr went 1-for-2 with an RBI. Lexi McKnight was 1-for-1.
GAC 5, Hebron 0
NORCROSS — Sarah Armstrong pitched a shutout and Christine Young hit a homer to lead Greater Atlanta Christian to a 5-0 win over Hebron on Thursday.
Armstrong allowed six hits and struck out six for the Spartans (16-11). Young was 2-for-3 with the solo homer. Brianna Stewart added three hits and two RBIs. Sierra Lawrence and Taylor Endres each had an extra-base hit.
