3 arrested in ambush robbery

DULUTH — Three Gwinnett men are charged with ambushing and robbing a man who thought he was at a Duluth fast-food restaurant to buy an iPhone from a friend, officials said Tuesday.

Police said the victim, a 22-year-old Lawrenceville man, agreed to meet a former coworker the night of Sept. 15 at a Wendy’s on Club Drive. The victim was duped into thinking he was there to buy an iPhone 3G for $100, but those pretenses were false, police said.

While speaking with his friend, the victim was bumrushed by a man who’d been hiding in some bushes, and both suspects proceeded to jump the victim, kicking him in the face and body, police said.

The suspects stole the man’s wallet, cell phone, money and car keys, then fled with another man in an Infiniti, said Gwinnett police spokesman Cpl. Brian Kelly.

The victim sustained cuts to his head and face and was transported to Gwinnett Medical Center for treatment. He provided police with an address for the assailant he knew, and police found all three men there Monday, Kelly said.

During interrogations, police found that all three suspects — the alleged organizer, Dan Ngo, 17, and Nicky Trinh, 20, both of Lawrenceville, and Michael Tran, 19, of Suwanee — had conspired to rob the victim, Kelly said.

All three remain at the Gwinnett County Jail on felony robbery charges.
