LAWRENCEVILLE -- A foot path leading from Lawrenceville's Forest Place community to the bustling commerce of nearby Ga. Highway 20 is a common route for pedestrians, police said.
On Wednesday night, it also proved a deadly route for one family walking home from a store.
Police said at least one gunman ambushed Jorge Luis Rodriguez, 19, and his mother and sister as they navigated the path in the dark about 9:10 p.m.
Lawrenceville police responded to a shots fired call to find Rodriguez dead, with robbery being the likely motive. No other injuries were reported.
Rodriguez and his family live on nearby Forest Place in the largely Hispanic enclave, Lawrenceville police Capt. Greg Vaughn said.
Rodriguez's family witnessed the shooting but did not get a good look at who fired the gun. Police are investigating the possibility at least two gunmen were involved. No suspects have been identified.
It wasn't clear what, if anything, was taken in the assault, Vaughn said.
"His sister and his mother didn't know what he had, so it made it kind of tough," he said.
An investigation continues.
